Our Story
Established December 2025
The Alamat Shop is a Filipina owned brand based out of New York. Our mission is to celebrate, share, and honor Filipino culture and history, by bridging the gap between local communities in the Philippines and Filipinos in the diaspora.
Founded by Ligaya Caballes, a Filipina independent historian and researcher, who focuses on the pre-colonial history, folklore, and culture of the Philippines, her vision for more accessible resources and learning for Filipinos in the diaspora wanting to reconnect with their heritage, inspired her to create The Alamat Shop.
The Alamat Shop acts as that bridge, providing books on Filipino history, culture, & folklore. Research and understanding is knowledge, it's how we can learn more about who we are and where we come from.
We also believe in supporting and sustaining traditional practices and arts such as weaving, carving, and pottery making. A part of The Alamat Shop's mission, is to develop sustainable ways to not only foster a love and appreciation for cultural knowledge, but to support local weavers and artisans in the Philippines. Giving an opportunity to grow in their craft, preserve these practices, while also making a living.
All of our traditional pieces of clothing are handmade and woven by various weaving communities in the Philippines. They are made with intention and pride, to support traditional textiles on both a local and global scale.
We also work directly with artisans to create and provide meaningful pieces of artwork. From ceramics, jewelry, musical instruments, salakot, woven banig, and more.
Every purchase you make supports these communities, weavers, and artisans to not only sustain and provide for themselves and families, but to continue to preserve, teach, and pass on these cultural traditions and knowledge to the next generation.
